Did You Know? A Look Back at Dental Health
Did you know the Weston A Price Foundation traces its inspiration to the 1930s, when dental health in young people was quickly declining? Children often suffered from tooth decay and crooked teeth. In contrast, older generations had stronger jaws, straighter teeth, and far fewer cavities. Dr. Weston A. Price, a dentist himself, suspected that processed foods were to blame.
Who Was Dr. Weston A. Price?
Dr. Price went on a worldwide journey to study traditional cultures. He discovered that communities who ate their ancestral diets had naturally straight teeth, wide jaws, and strong immunity, even without modern dental care. In other words, their food choices created resilience and health.
The Birth of the WAPF
Decades later, the Weston A Price Foundation (WAPF) was established in 1999 to carry forward this research. The group teaches that modern diets often lack nutrients. For example, too much reliance on processed foods, industrial seed oils, and synthetic additives strips away the essentials our bodies need. In addition, popular low-fat and plant-based trends often leave out critical vitamins and minerals.
Why Traditional Diets Matter for Families
The WAPF highlights how whole, traditional foods support children, pregnant women, and families planning to conceive. Their message is simple: long-term health begins in the gut. As a result, they encourage nutrient-dense meals that help:
- Build a baby’s brain
- Prevent childhood physical and behavioral issues
- Support a healthy, complication-free pregnancy
Nutrition and Independence
Unlike many organizations, the Weston A Price Foundation is independent. This means it does not take direction from Big Food or Big Pharma. Instead, it publishes shopping guides, recipes, and resources that recommend small farms, local food sources, and traditional preparation methods. For example, their 2022 shopping guide offers practical lists of nutrient-dense foods, and the 2024 version is now available for just $5.
How Families Benefit
Parents who follow WAPF principles often report improvements in children’s behavior, stronger immunity, and better overall development. In addition, many families appreciate the emphasis on root causes instead of quick fixes. By focusing on gut health and nutrient-dense foods, the WAPF gives families tools to create lasting wellness.
