An introduction for parents who have already tried everything.
“I read all the books. I listened to all the advice. And I just don’t understand how this happened.”
We hear a version of that almost every week.
Usually it comes from a mom who has done more research than most doctors. She has been to the pediatrician. She has done speech therapy, OT, maybe ABA. She has cut out foods, added supplements, tracked sleep, and filled out the questionnaires.
And she is still sitting across from us asking the same question.
Why isn’t any of it sticking?
There is an answer. It has a name most parents have never heard, and it sits underneath almost everything else you have been working on.
It’s called dysafferentation.
Two words that explain a lot
Your brain and your body are in constant conversation. Signals travel both directions, all day, every day.
When your brain sends a message down the spinal cord and out to the body, that is efferentation. Brain to body.
When the body and the world send information back up to the brain, that is afferentation. World to brain.
That second one matters more than most people realize. Your brain does not actually experience the world directly. It only ever knows what the body reports back to it. Every decision your brain makes is based on that incoming report.
So what happens when the report is wrong?
That is dysafferentation. Bad signals coming in.
Think of static on a TV. The picture is being broadcast. It is arriving. But it arrives scrambled, and no matter how carefully you watch, you cannot make out what you are looking at.
Now imagine a brain trying to build itself off that signal.
The brain builds in order
Here is the piece that changes how parents see everything.
The brain does not develop all at once. It develops in a specific sequence, from the bottom up, right to left, and back to front. Roughly six stages.
The spinal cord comes first, in utero. Then the brainstem and cerebellum. Then the right side of the brain, from birth to about three. The left side starts coming online around four. Then the parietal lobe around five and six. The frontal lobe, where critical thinking and long term consequences live, comes last.
Every stage is built on the one below it.
Which means a problem at the foundation does not stay at the foundation. It travels.
What actually happens, step by step
Step one. Bad signals in.
Dysafferentation. The brain is working off distorted input.
Step two. The brainstem and cerebellum struggle.
They are not getting clean neurological information, so they cannot do their job properly.
Step three. Primitive reflexes stay stuck.
Primitive reflexes are the God given survival movements a baby is born with. Rooting, startle, grasping. They exist to protect a baby who cannot protect himself. They are supposed to integrate and fade as the next layer of the brain comes online and says, we are safe now, I don’t need these anymore.
But integration requires good input from the brainstem and cerebellum. Without it, those reflexes hang around long past their expiration date. And as long as they are active, the brain reads the situation as: we are still in survival mode.
Step four. The cortex can’t develop properly.
This is the big part of the brain, the part most people picture when they hear the word. Sensory processing goes first. Then motor processing, because it is very hard to move through a world you cannot accurately sense.
Step five. You see it.
This is where parents finally get a word for what is happening. Speech delays. Sensory overwhelm. Meltdowns. Poor sleep. Trouble with focus. Balance and coordination problems. Posture that never quite developed.
Notice where that list is. It is at the very top of the chain.
That is what you are seeing. It is not where the problem started.
Why “we tried everything” is usually true
Here is the part that is not meant as criticism of anyone.
Most of the support available to your child works at the top of that pyramid.
A lot of therapy works on sensory and motor. That is the top layer. There are genuinely excellent therapists doing this, and it helps.
Some providers go a layer deeper and work directly on integrating primitive reflexes, running kids through the movement patterns from the outside in. That is better, and it works better.
The best go deeper still and stimulate the brainstem and cerebellum first, often with lasers or other tools, so the primitive reflex work has something to stand on. These people are phenomenal. We follow their work.
But in our opinion, almost nobody is addressing the dysafferentation underneath all of it.
So a family does a year of speech therapy and sees small gains that fade. They do reflex integration and get somewhere, then plateau. They keep climbing the pyramid, and the foundation keeps shifting under them.
You can’t build skills on a brain that isn’t regulated first.
Where chiropractic fits
Dysafferentation is what we address.
When a bone in the spine misaligns, it puts pressure on a nerve. That pressure distorts the signal traveling up to the brain. In chiropractic we call that a subluxation, and it is what we are looking for when we say we are checking for interference in the nervous system.
That interference often starts early. In utero. During delivery. In the first months of life. Long before anyone thinks to look at a spine.
When we take the pressure off, the signal cleans up. Afferentation instead of dysafferentation.
And then something worth paying attention to happens. The rest of the pyramid starts working better on its own. The primitive reflexes finally get the input they need to integrate. Sensory processing improves. And the therapies that were not sticking before start sticking, because now they have a foundation to build on.
We are not replacing any of that work. We are making it land.
Two things we want to be clear about
First, an honest limit. We are not saying that every case of speech delay or sensory difficulty or neurodivergent behavior develops exactly this way. That would not be true, and we are not going to say it. What we are saying is that a very large portion does, and it is not talked about nearly enough.
Second, adjusting is not the whole answer. Your child’s brain needs three things: stimulation, oxygen, and energy.
Everything above is stimulation. It is crucial. But if a child is not breathing well, if the airway is compromised, if they are not getting real nutrients or sunlight or time outside moving their body, the brain will not develop the way it should no matter how good the stimulation is.
Movement builds the brain. So does food. So does sleep. So does light.
We will talk about all of that with you. But we start at the foundation, because starting anywhere else is how families end up exhausted and back where they began.
If you are the mom in the first paragraph
You are not crazy.
You noticed something was wrong before anyone confirmed it. You kept looking after people told you to wait and see. You trusted your gut when the answers you were given did not match what you were watching at home.
That instinct was right.
And if you have been carrying the question of whether you caused this, put it down. It is almost never one thing. It is layers of physical, chemical, and emotional stress stacking up on a nervous system until it cannot regulate anymore. That is not a parenting failure. That is a nervous system that needs support.
